Spanish contemporary ceramics are experiencing a period of growing interest within the worlds of art and design. More and more artists are using clay not simply as a craft material, but as a language capable of expressing volume, identity, memory and a sense of place.
Within this renewed approach to ceramics is the work of Marco Terranova, a ceramic artist based in Seville, Spain. His practice begins with one of the oldest tools in the ceramic tradition: the potter’s wheel. However, rather than reproducing traditional forms, Terranova transforms them into contemporary sculptures and sculptural vessels.
The wheel initially creates balance, symmetry and circular movement. From this structure, forms can be altered, opened, distorted or transformed through changes in proportion. In this process, an object that may initially recall a traditional vessel gradually loses its functional character and acquires a new sculptural presence.
The Mediterranean is also a central influence in Marco Terranova’s work. Andalusia, Italy, Greece and the cultures that have historically connected the shores of the Mediterranean form part of a visual language shaped by architecture, archaeology, eroded surfaces and objects made from clay.
Ceramics also involves an element that can never be completely controlled: fire. During firing, glazes react, surfaces change and the material itself contributes to the final character of each piece. As a result, every work retains subtle variations that make it unique.
This combination of tradition and experimentation defines much of today’s contemporary ceramic art. Technical knowledge remains essential, but it becomes a starting point for exploring new forms, textures and meanings.
Working from Seville, Marco Terranova develops a practice centred on contemporary ceramic sculpture, wheel-thrown forms and the relationship between matter, memory and the Mediterranean landscape.
